If this works, here's a slideshow of our excursion to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Truly an amazing thing to see. At one point I teared up a bit. God sure created a beautiful place for us to live didn't he?
Stephan doesn't really call it snowy as much anymore, but that's one of his many adorable pronunciations.
Anywhoo, here's our fabulous April blizzard that kept UPS from delivering my packages. I'm so peeved they won't let me sign for them to just leave them when I'm not here anymore.
And we enjoyed some breakfast for dinner tonight too. French toast, which I love, eaten with anything but syrup. Tonight I ate it with my homemade yogurt and fresh strawberries. Mmm. Sorry for the crappy photo, it's either flash and get the nice sharp picture with everything a little bright or fuzzy because I'm shaky without the flash, but the coloring is better. Can't wait for my new camera without the broken lens to get here. Eventually.
One of my first posts this month was about how HOT it was as the NaBloPoMo theme for the month was HOT. Yesterday we completely kicked hot in the arse and apparently it's staying away for a bit. We are getting a TON of rain too. Went from sunshine and 80s to rain, rain, rain and 50s. Tomorrow it's still supposed to be rainy, but maybe in the 70s and then back to the 80s Monday. Nice to have a little respite from the heat.
It's also nice to experience a super rainy couple days. We don't get a whole lot of moisture out here, especially not this time of year. Once a dj on KBCO referenced the month of June as the "greening of Colorado" and another said that time of year was followed rapidly by the "browning" which is typically July/August. Often when rain comes this time of year it's a brief afternoon thunderstorm. So two, maybe three, days of pretty much solid rain is unusual. Sort of like a location warp and we now live in Seattle or something.
Unfortunately, the gym was SUPER busy because of the rain and the fact that it's Saturday. There was a waiting list for the kids club. Thankfully, Stephan was first in line and after debating for a few minutes if we should wait or not, a couple kids got picked up and Stephan was in. We were able to get a decent workout in and by the time we left the rain had let up a bit.
Tonight Andy's off to his first Bronco game in his new universe of season tickets. I feel a bit bad for him, having to go in a potential rainstorm, but he'll make it and I'm sure he and his friend will have a great time together!
As I listen to a toddler scream ...
Andy took the day off today and we decided to head up to Breckinridge as it's right up I-70 and doesn't take too long. More time to have fun, less time and gas driving.
Seemed to take a while to get up there today but it's a pretty drive and Stephan loved the super long Eisenhower tunnel.
About halfway through the tunnel we heard a loud "POP" and thought something happened with our car, or that a nearby truck backfired. When we got to Breck we discovered that neither was the case, the altitude had poped open our bag of chips.
Here are a few more pictures of the magnificent Rocky Mountains.
We really enjoy the town of Breck. Wandering around the shops and enjoying the wonderful views.
Stephan and daddie hanging out on the bridge enjoying the sounds of the rushing river.
Sometimes we seriously contemplate moving up to the mountains, but the commutes to Denver and Boulder would so not be very fun and finding jobs nearby probalby wouldn't be all that easy. Sure is fun to trek up there for the day though.
Talk about tired. We had an interesting picnic lunch, I forgot to pack Stephan's lunchable. He did eat his cheese stick, peas and a few blueberries, but no meat. We decided to stop at Wendy's and get him some chicken nuggets. He was drowsy when we finally got there, and fell asleep during chicken nugget #2. Of course Andy and I decided we wanted to wander around a couple of the outlet shops in Silverthorne and he woke up and finished the rest of his nuggets. While I coveted a new purse from the Coach outlet, I did not get anything, and neither did Andy.
Before leaving we stopped at the restrooms and Stephan decided he had to go potty too. No, he's not potty trained yet, I think he just wanted in on the action too. Since they had a family restroom we figured we'd give it a shot, since he was interested. Very nice bathroom. There were two rooms, the first had a nice comfy chair for nursing and a diaper changing area with a sink. The other had both a normal size and toddler size potty. I've never seen a restroom like this and thought it was neat. (Hence the picture I had to take and consequently share).
Stephan also enjoyed the river and we even found a way to wander down right by the water.
The toddler is now quiet, and possibly working on falling asleep in his bed. I can't see where he is from my perch in the hall, and I'm afraid if I try and check on him he'll see me and start screaming again.
Now, on to post this at WP for NaBloPoMo. Can I just say that sometimes WP drives me nuts, esp. when I want to include photos in a post. Argh. And I bet they thought they made it better ... instead, it's worse!
Pray, even if you aren't one to pray.
Lightning started a fire on Green Mountain a few miles from my home and the fire continues to spread toward us. One of the downfalls of the dryness in CO.
The fire's not damaged any homes and they are working on containing it, but we are also working on preparing for a possible evacuation if things worsen.
Thanks!
I'll keep you updated as often as I can.
Ok, so you might not be excited about this, but I'm tired today and I think it might be a bit psychological with them yammering on about the heat here all the time.
While it doesn't always seem very toasty outside to me, at least not as bad as some summers I've experienced, we've recently had a record number of days above 90, the HOTTEST summer in many years.
Today marks 21 consecutive days above 90. And apparently the hottest it's ever gotten in Denver was 105, we hit 104 on Thursday. Maybe it doesn't seem so bad to me because I've been spending the hottest part of the day inside with AC while Stephan naps.
9News posted that we officially broke today's record temp as it reached 102 in Denver. They are posting a "heat advisory" and telling people to drink lots of water and take it easy. Sort of silly since it gets way hotter in places like Vegas. Guess it's all relative to what you are used to. Thankfully it's at least cloudy, the sunshine we normally have everyday would make it all the hotter.
I find it funny that Tuesday's forecast says 88 and "cooler." I'm sure it will feel cooler, but 65 would be cooler to me and more comfortable too, 88 is still HOT. I just hope it cools off a bit more before school starts. I think both of my schools have AC, but there are so many that don't and it can be unbearable in some of those buildings.
In other news. I spent $17 shipping a package to my nieces. I can't believe it. I probably should have taken it to the PO instead of UPS but it may not have made a difference. Apparently Brown can do for you, but you'll pay for it. I hope the girls enjoy their gifts. We were going to do gift cards, but then I found this Biblezine that I wanted to send my older niece. It's like a magazine with articles and quizzes and stuff for teen girls but also has the whole NT included in the format. We got her a bracelet too, from Stephan. My middle niece we got a watch and the youngest a DVD. I didn't get the chance to connect with my SIL to see what they might like. It's hard when I don't see them that often. We also found a cake mix at Target and popped that in the box too. My oldest niece is allergic to eggs and dairy and some wheat thing too and this chocolate cake mix didn't have any of those things in it. Was pricey but hopefully the can enjoy it. Had Stephan make a thank you for the gift they sent him and put that in the box too.
Stephan's up again. He's really suffering these blasted molars. Clean bill of health from the Dr. but he's in pain and is so stuffed up it's ridiculous and he can't breathe and wakes up crying. Thankfully these are the last teeth for a bit.
I know I live in Colorado ... BUT seriously, I'M SO OVER THE SNOW. It's not October. Thankfully I can stay home and chill and not have to drive in it. This is probably the most snow I've seen this late in spring. They said something about still having great snowboarding and skiing conditions in the mountains too. Crazy how much there is and it's still coming down pretty good too. Love the green grass and white snow combo, don't get that too often do you?
